Double clicking to end a polygon when drawing it while easy .. is not
totally obvious ... if I could give a title to the elements as they are
being drawn so that users who pause wondering what to do next could get
a message that might solve the issue in a very clean fashion... anyone

I think it was a sandbox item. But I had the impression
it was only worked for WMS.. (which is rather a noteable
limit) Ive been trying to find it, without luck anyone know
what I am talking about?

To give a little more clue the most obvious error is
TileCache Layer is doubling a Stripe of the tiles on left side at the
outer most zoom

There are limits, In google maps if you create a view with more than a
few hundred markers (varies by machine processing ability) there can be
some real burdening of map performance... can anyone tell me if a
iimilar situation exists in openlayers and what work arounds there are?

You probably already know it but the standard distance code is only
accurate in EPSG:4326 (LatLon)
and most CRS whose units are degrees it is pretty close as well.
In many/most other projections a linear distance n whatever units the
CRS uses (almost always meters)
is probably pretty useable.
There is accurate distance measurement using the Vincenty distance
formula...
Haverine is umm simulating the earth as sphere and is not accurate.
What Open Layers lacks is a gui for measurement.
