Its been a while since this post, that I tried Base again today. I have
a new OO 3.1.0 on OpenSUSE 11.1 in the mean time. Various JRE's are on
the system, but OO is configured to use the newest Sun Version from
OpenSUSE that I installed today:
java-1_6_0-sun - Java(TM) 6 Runtime Environme

You say your trying Base instead of Access. So I assume you opened an
MDB-file. For as far as I know, Base only opens the tables of the
mdb-file and cannot save any changes you made to the original mdb-file.
If you want keep any changes, then you must save it to the OpenOffice
ODB-format.
