I set the printer parameters in the printer settings - properties -
orientation as Landscape. I then clicked on a highlighted part of a
spreadsheet and sent it to the printer. It came out portrait which
means that the ends of some of the rows

I cannot argue with this logicmaybe its just a question of getting
rid of bad MS habits and assumptions.
It is, however, a bit confusing to simply print something without ever
looking at the page settings---and discover the the printer
landscape/portrait setting has no effect.
