I had the same problem (and posted in users@openoffice.org). I was told that the problem is caused by a wrong font in the X11 update. There is a workaround suggested by others: Open the terminal application and type: sudo mkdir -p /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF.bad return enter your password
