Sorry that I made the mistake. I was getting setup to send the User Group a
question. I opened a message and then deleted everything in the message. I
did not realize I was breaking a thread.

Hi Michele
I am thinking of a simple outline where the different 'subjects", where the
"different thought", are first put on a sheet of paper. As the document is
written the outline can be changed as the "subjects", as the "different
thoughts", change.

I'm a heavy outliner and I've yet to find a decent outlining app for
Linux. I just read this quote:

I remember a thread here a few months ago about outlining in OOo. I've

compacting of sections/paragraphs in Writer, and appropriate headings
and indentation? I've thought about using styles, but the

Hi Al,
Looks as though maybe you've gotten confused between two similar but
different 'outline' concepts. One is used in lists, and gives you
something like this:
1. Do this
2. Do that
a. blah blah

..etc. That's what I was giving instructions for in the post you found.

Hi all,
I'm new to the list. I searched the archives on Outlining in OOWriter. I
have used Outlining for manuscripts in M$ Word. It works very
intuitively as an "Outline" View.
Is there any chance that an outline View or another application that
does outlines will be usable in OO that functions a
oh, right.
that would be nice but i use the 'Heading levels'
button for that. when i'm only interested in the
level 1 headings, i long-click on it and select 1.
this will only show the main chapter headings.
when i wish to see all, i select 10.

hi bob
where exactly do you wish to show/hide the levels?
if you are talking about outline numbering for
headings, use Tools - Outline numbering. if you're
just talking about lists, use Format - Bullets and
numbering. select individual levels and define the
bullet/numbering/nothing you wish to

If you're talking heading outline numbering - eg.
1 MAIN HEADING
(text)
1.1 Subheading
(text)
1.1.1 Subsubheading
(text)
2 MAIN HEADING
(text)
... etc
This confused me at first too. I'm using 1.9.79, and I don't have time
to look at 1.4, but try Tools -> Outline Numbering. Assign your major
