If you downloaded OOo from the official page, then checked the MD5 sum
to ensure that it was the correct one, it is highly unlikely that the
OOo install was the cause of any trojan infection.
I would recommend checking any other software that you installed that
day just to be sure.

All the documents I save in Writer will only open up as a WordPad file. Even if
I've made sure in the "save as type" box to set it as a word processing
document, after it's saved it will only open up in WordPad. This is only an

You need to associate you files with OpenOffice.
Find one of the files in question. Right click on that file. Click on
Open With and then Choose Program. From the list find OpenOffice,
tick the box that says 'Always use this program...' and click ok.
Repeat for files with different exten
This problem is not in OOo but in Windows - in Windows, each file extension is
associated with a program that will open that type of file, even though it
may not be the only program that will handle that type.

It sounds as though there may be several things going on here, not
just one thing. There are many reasons that you could have started
getting spam / broadband connections dropping - however not alot of
this has to do with OpenOffice.
As to OOo stability however - is there any error messages report
