I found a strange error that can help :
In the page (in view mode), a specific tooltip javascript is included and
the response to the request
(http://server/xwiki/wiki/welcome/ssx/XWiki/Tooltip?language=fr)
is 404 (welcome is the name of the instance wiki).

{{code}} macro instead ? This one is not based on pre so you should
not get the same issues.
