You can create a separate partition and redirect the user's data to that and don't enable SteadyState on that partition. On Wed, Aug 18, 2010 at 11:53 AM, Skylar Walker wrote:I use Steady State for several Windows computers labs that I maintain. Since I moved to that I haven't had to re-image the c

I use Steady State for several Windows computers labs that I maintain. Since I moved to that I haven't had to re-image the computers for anything except to add new software to the image. I recommend it to everyone. The advantage is that as soon as you restart the computer it resets everything to ho

I have a hard time agreeing with the VM option, as I've done it and disliked it, but she might not mind. If you want speed, dd isn't your only option. rm+cp and rsync (with delete) both should work. I set up a similar thing back in 2003 for my parents. I had a copy of their OS partition on my c

I second this approach. It has the distinct advantage of being quick to rollback. Anything based on periodic snapshots would be much quicker than a DD approach. Major downside is that the OS is running inside of a VM, meaning less performance (although it sounds like you might not care that much

Also, chrome os is supposed to be for this sort of usage profile, i.e. they can't change the distro, and they save everything out on the web, and it is simple to use, because it is mostly just a browser. But I don't know how far along it is or if it would be ready for general consumption yet. Jam

+1 to David's suggestion--only it is very time consuming to do that. You can save an image of a whole partition with a fresh install via dd on the command-line in Linux. Create a backup partition, and just boot into a live environment. Restoring an XP image with no software will take about 1-3 h

I setup a Windows install inside of Virtualbox. Then when it gets corrupted, you can roll back to the last snapshot / backup. Richard On Monday, August 16, 2010 21:20:22 "Brian Phillips" wrote: > Have a disabled family member who has a computer as a connection to the > outside world. They don

How about linux? Just put a simple script in init that runs dd, then reboots. You might want to put the script on a separate device, so not only would linux have to be started, but a specific usb key would have to be attached. David On Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 3:20 AM, Brian Phillips wrote: > Have
