this is a brand new install. the old environment is so old that it was too
expensive to upgrade it or buy something to hold both types of tapes. the ADIC
is using DLT 8000 drives and we have the 40/80 GB tapes. the SDLT drives that
can read them can only be bought from junk dealers.

Do you use the barcodes that come with the LTO4 tapes or do you use
custom barcodes?
Do you know

hypothetically we aren't going to junk our old ADIC Scalar 1000 and the solaris
server that's running netbackup 6 MP4. we're just going to not use them and/or
shut them down until we need to restore something. Or we're going to put in a
SCSI card in the new server and just run the ADIC to the
were to request a tape.

I think this is a mistake.
Media type (hcart, dlt, hcart2) etc is just a label - part of the media
database

Check your barcode rules, or use the vmchange command to force it to HCART.

Yes,
both LTO 3 and LTO4 are HP brand.
Thanks.

I believe he was saying the tapes themselves are being recognized as dlt media.
That sounds like you have the wrong bar codes on the tapes to me.
First, check what the library itself is reporting, and change the barcodes if
neccessary. If the library does not think the tapes are LTO4, NBU

You might want to also check your barcode rules. The labels on the LTO4
tapes may be the same as an old DLT barcode.

I saw this problem myself, and adding another barcode rule fixed it.
