What SP are you running? Whats in the event logs?
Any updates applies? I know Microsoft released a new VSS update.

Ok but if you get the error using the internal NTBackup, then ntbackup
normally reports a problem in either the system or application log,
especially where VSS is involved !

Are you using Windows 2003 R2 with File Server Resource Manager
installed? If yes, try to stop srmsvc service and see if the backup runs
successfully.

Policy of this server was configureed with backup selection as
ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES.
backup was completing succesfull
code are you getting for the error? Is it Status 71?

This often caused by the shadow area being too small.
I would check the VSS messages in the application event log and volsnap
messages in the system event log
The 7.5.0.X version also have a problem with DSFR
