"Between them, the old men must have created hundreds of trout flies and insect

perhaps two exceptions, none of their titillating offerings ever stired a
trout's interest, a fact that didn't bother them at all."

If you use Boar's bristle paint brushes as the fibets, you will find that they
contain a natural taper and work wonderfully. They are also much cheaper.
There are also some nylon paint brushes with tapering ends, but they are very
expensive. They have rather a white end to the fiber so you must
Monofilament can work. A taper can be achieved by taking a length and sand
paper it at its centre until it breaks off in two... and then you'll have
your two in one go and it's just cutting them to length left (and clear ones
too).

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. Great ideas. I was looking up
Joyce's Boar's bristle brush idea and found these, in white.

Not synthetic, but pretty good looking.

Wes,
Try a patch of Porcupine. You need a patch with a lot of kind of under hair. I
have a patch with quills but also a patch with small quills and a lot of long
like hairs. I think that would work for you. I have used them for antennas in
the past for realistic flies.

Jeff, That will work if they are not real old. I am having a hard time finding
the right ones that I weave the extended bodies on my Mayfly. Seems what I have
been finding is just too brittle and break once bent. I agree they would be
fine if the right ones can be found.

Wes,
I picked up a shaving brush (if you can find it) These are pretty
nice. They are natural, tapered and they are varigated.
