Talking of solvents, I have just cleaned a reel in solvent (low odour paint
thinner) to remove the old grease which had dried out. This solvent is quite
good at removing old grease and does not mar the finish. Then I applied Super
Lube synthetic grease and oil. Now I’m ready to fish.

The minwax spar sounds like something I'd like to try. And I can probably
get it locally :)

I prefer to omit colour preserver but when tying with a silver or gold thread
inlay, it can be a problem as the wraps becomes translucent one can see the
hidden tags through the wrap.
I would not have used the 1985 varnish. I have an unopened bottle of Gudebrod
rod varnish in front of me as I t
Hi Wes,
Here is a bass article on setting the hook. It is more for gear fishers,
but does give some insight.

We do quite a bit of bass fishing here in Indiana. Sometimes giving the
bass a 1-2 count before setting the hook helps.
Neville,
Fifth rod - I try to keep a beginner's mind - wanting to learn more :)
Didn't use color preserver, I prefer the more translucent look without
color preserver. This rod was purchased at our annual fly fishing club
auction last year. It was originally purchased in the 80's and sat in the

Looks like very nice job. I thought you said you were a beginner. Did you use
colour preserver on the wraps?

Hi VFB,
We are starting our fishing season here in Central Oregon. Yay!
A couple of friends went after largemouth bass at our local bass fishery,
Davis Lake. They reported seven hits on poppers, but only one fish hooked
and boated.
Since we are not in bass land, but rather trout and steelhead
Thanks Neville,
I used some Hopkins & Holloway guides on my last rod and like them because
they required little prep and seem to wrap well. Thanks for the info.

For such a lightweight rod recoil snakes may be a good choice. I have them on
my Winston and like them!

In the “good old days’ I used to buy “Perfection” snake guides made in USA but
later, some that I purchased were labelled made in Mexico. In this part of the
world I don’t see perfection guides much any more. The late Dave Lewis used Pac
Bay guides for his custom rods & spoke well of them
Jack,
I think you might find this article interesting regarding the number and
sizes of guides :

I have a 7wt 2 piece Tiger Eye Blank that I'm thinking about building and
am sorting through some of the different fly rod guides out there.
Has anyone used the Snake Brand Universal guides? The talk about them
seems to be good, but they are more expensive? Or how about Hook and Hackle
guides or
Ok thanks for the update..
