You really need to get an intermediary Mac to handle transferring
files, or some other method. If something goes wrong with your SE hard
drive, you will have no way to work with it.
However, in lieu of that you have several options with OS X:

Nope. If there are no read LEDs (2 of them – one on each side), then
the drive won't work. I have never seen a 400K drive in that
condition. What you have there most likely is the equivalent of a
512Ke. I'll bet you it has 128K Plus ROMs as well that come with the
800K drive upgrade.

Right!
They are the same except 400k write to only one side. The other way doesn't
work, though. Putting a 400k inside an 800k drive.
Sorry. . . a mental lapse. Comes with age.

Well, I'm not seeing a red light inside the floppy drive but I suppose that
it might be broken. . . or it could have been changed out with an 800k disk.
Looks like I'll be cracking it open again now that I have more information
to identify it by its parts.
I should probably get 400k disks. Or is

This link will give you a lot of information on the history of your
Mac. http://homepage.mac.com/chinesemac/earlymacs/
As far as I know, the 50th week is about as early as any production
Mac rolled off the assembly line, but there might have been some as
early as the 48th or 49th.
Are you sure i

What about a Superdrive in a Mac Classic? It can read AND write to 400k
disks. . . right? Could I download system 3 and MacWrite and MacDraw on my
iBook. I do have an external floppy drive. Move it to the Classic and make
the boot disk there. I don't actually need to make the boot disk on a 400k

As fas as I know, the EC is a further stripped down 040. From Wikipedia:
"Versions of the '040 were created for specific market segments, including the
68LC040 which removed the FPU, and the 68EC040 which removed both the FPU and
MMU. Motorola had intended the EC variant for embedded use but em

I heard from a well-known mac guy in my area that the EC chips were better
than the full 040, so I swapped him for a EC in my 610. It runs poorly.

I have a plus that is one of the 1mb factory upgrades from Apple. I
can't remember if a 512 has 400 or 800k drives, but guess that doesn't
matter if email can work. The system is old enough that when you look
under the apple menu it just says something to the effect of Apple

the disk needs to be made on an "old" Mac, and i don't think he has one

Does anyone know a reason that this couldn't just be emailed to David?
I have an ancient disk with this information that should work that I
could probably email.
I think the system, finder MacWrite and MacPaint come out less that 400k.
