on Apple's 7.5 Disk Tools floppy if other stuff is
deleted.
If that works then the next step is to add RamDisk 3.2.4 to 7.5 Disk Tools
and set it up so that it transfers System Folder to ramdisk then ejects.
A 2nd floppy with MNU and other utilities can then be used.

Anyway, Mt Everything CAN'T see the drive. At all. Normally a troublesome
drive will stil show on it's ID,
Ben
What if:
The 540c has 8.1 on it and the HD is formatted HFS+.
Would HFS+ prevent these old utilities from seeing the HD?
Maybe some flavor of Drive Setup will see it.

How do you know that the RAM was bad?
Did you try that RAM with the new ribbon installed?

I was cleaning out some iCab bookmarks and ran across this.
AFAIK it's rare, and was not on DayStar's site when it went down.

Can anyone confirm or discount my guess that a Mac II (IIx, IIfx) won't
boot if the PRAM batteries are dead? I've got several older II models
and none have ever booted.
Jamie
Confirmed. But most of the time only one, the same one, of the batteries
needs to be replaced.

I would guess that Apple got to them, were it not for one of the sites

The capacitors near the PSU plug on the mobo might be bad. Visually
inspect them for damage/leakage and test 'em for continuity.

Please tell, how does one test a capacitor for continuity?

Make sure that the voltage doesn't sag during boot.

But beware. iCab starts grabbing memory from the System heap when it starts
to run short in its own heap. That can happen real fast with modern (read
