You still can’t get past the updates screen.

And what happens if after it takes you to the app store you then simply exit
the app store or go back to the app in question via the app switcher?

That’s not what’s happening here. When I open the app (I’m talking about the
iRobot app in this case) I am presented with a screen informing me that an
update is available. There is a button that says “update” which when tapped
takes me to the app store. There is no way to decline this update
Turning on screen recognition is definitely a good tool to try. I once again
point to one app I use and which is completely and entirely inaccessible. The
app is 3CX, a VoIP phone app which works together with the phone system I have
at my store. Without screen recognition you ca't do anything
I have the TV Guide app. I believe the notification you are receiving, is
notifying you of changes in the updated version of the app. That is, the
update has already occurred, not, that the update is pending.
If you wish to prevent apps from updating automatically, go to: Settings >
That’s exactly the kind of thing that I’m talking about. Your only option is to
update . you can’t say you‘ll do it later or I don’t want the update or
anything there is one single button and in order to use the app you have to
take the update.

Are you talking about the new VoiceOver Recognition features, such as
Screen/Text/Image Recognition? I'm coming in late on this thread, but
remember those don't work equally on all iPhones.

There are features under iOS 14.4 which you can turn on and they should help
you make some sense out of the app.
They are screen identification features.

Did you try any of the new identifying features in 14.4?

Well, that seems to answer the question.
Some apps won't let you decide for yourself.
That is stupid beyond belief.
I'd be complaining loudly to Apple as well as the app developer.

One example that I dealt with recently was the TV Guide Mobile app. Upon
launching the app, there was a screen that informed you of an update, and
the only action you could take was to tap an OK button. Upon updating, I
was confronted with a totally different layout that was inaccessible.
Are there some specific apps you can site as examples?
I've not run into this.
Do you have automatic updates turned off in your iPhone settings?

Hi all,
Recently I've noticed a rather disturbing trend in various iPhone
apps. Frequently when an update is available I am presenting with an
update button upon opening the app in question. This is okay except
when there is no way to get past this screen without doing the
update.
