Whether apps update automatically or not has nothing to do with background app
refresh. If you don't want this to happen you have to go to Settings > iTunes
and App Store and turn on automatic downloads for apps.

figured it out for me. I had restrictions turned on which was
preventing me from changing the status in background app refresh. Once
I turned off restrictions all was working as it should.

There is Background App Refresh in Settings > General, but I doubt it would
make a difference with what you are describing. It sounds like the app just
doesn't support background operation/downloading. Probably something you should
write to the developer about and request it.

Hey Jed,
When I'm in Settings, General, Background App Refresh, it's reporting the
status of each app for me - it says "on" or "off" after the app name.
