Is there a way to check the warranty status of the phone or do I just need to

Assuming there is no warranty you can take it to any place that does smart
phone batteries.
Check with your carrier.
Or, call some place like Batteries Plus, and if they don't do it, they will
likely tell you who does in your area.
If it is under warranty, you may need to find an authorized repai
Even worse, there don't seem to be any Apple stores at all in my area. Can you
get the battery replaced at a carrier store like T-mobile?

Draining Fast and Charging Slowly
How exactly do you check battery health? When I go into battery, I see that I
can check activity for the past 24 hours or the past 10 days, and I can read
the percentage of battery used by each app, but not the specific figure that
says what my battery capacity is
I have rebooted the phone and reset network settings to no avail. I am
wondering if the battery case I tried for a few days damaged something somehow,
though I can't see how that might have happened. But this level of battery
drain is just not acceptable for daily use.

Well, the Apple store in Portland, Oregon, won't replace a battery until it
drops below 80 percent.
But, that is if they are under warranty.
For about $49 you can have a battery replaced out of warranty.
At least, that is my understanding.

Apple considers 84% battery capacity sufficiently reduced for replacement. The
battery on my 6S Plus was at 84% last year when I asked at an Apple Store to
have it replaced when they offered the $29.99 battery replacement and the
technician said they can certainly do this given it's at 84%.

Kelby,
How long have you had the lightning cable? Before going to the extreme of
changing the battery, I would try to borrow a lightning cable from friend or
family member and try it like that. Sometimes, cables are intermittent
