In NeoReader, if you take the app out of the app switcher, it won't stay on. I
can't say if it won't when you just exit the app.
Here are the scanning tips from the Digit-eyes web site, the basic information
is good for any scanning app. Just ignore the spots where

Okay well may be that's what was wrong as was not near any items with a bar
code on it when set the app up.
So will uninstall it and reinstall it and then make sure am out in the kitchen
when do to see if works this time with an item with a bar code

It seems to scan your next item, it helps to double tap where it says "Scan
heading."
I couldn't get a second item to scan until I did this.

Could someone tell me how to use the Neoscan app? I am completely unable to
get it to do anything other than allow me to hand enter a barcode; there seems
to be no choice for it to use the camera to scan the item, although there is a
choice to allow

I just downloaded one called NeoReader. It seems to have a better
omnidirectional scanner. you don't get the results straight away, you have to
choose Amazon or Google search, I choose Google, and then are usually get very
good results!
