I think something might change with your library. The first time I opened
iTunes after the upgrade there was a message about reorganizing the library
(actually that wasn't the wording but I don't remember) and it took quite a
while.

I'm glad now that I taught myself to use it without the sidebar, though even so
it is a bit different than before. The sidebar was admittedly nice though.

I haven't used the sidebar any more since iTunes 11 came out and actually
like it better that way. To get to your Device you just click on the button
for your device which is usually right next to the iTunes Store button in
all of the libraries.
