Many modern Cable/DSL modems that connect over ethernet have built in
firewall/routers. You should make sure that isn't the case here. Just look up the
gateway IP on your parents computer and see if it has a web interface.

If the address is in the range of 192.168.x.x, it is being assigned by the
dsl modem. That range of addresses are not routable across the internet.
You need to get the routable ip address of the dsl modem and see if you can
