Heyaz. I've tried to summarize the known incompatability between
VNC and Windows' Terminal Services here:

I hope it helps make sense of what many are seeing.

Dear group:
I recently upgraded my WinVNC to version 4.0 Built Jun 15, 2004 on a Windows Me
machine.
I was somewhat concerned about the upgrade since I had problems with 4.0beta hanging

I'm confused. Isn't this list for RealVNC users only? Or do users of other
VNC versions appear here as well?
According to the RealVNC website - hiding the icon is impossible:

For it to work, you must use a modified client/server.

I don't want to be harsh here - but I am starting to get the feeling that
VNC 4.0 is a step backward. It seems to have features that were in Version
3.3.x missing and there are a lot of 'it doesn't work' messages on this
list. Am I wrong? What are the advantages of using version 4?

Annie,
There are at least two Windows versions of VNC which will transfer
files. UltraVNC at ultravnc.sourceforge.net and TightVNC at
www.tightvnc.com are the ones I've tried. They are both in beta.

Hey Annie,
If the computers are on a LAN you can simply copy them over. If they are
on a WAN then you can either use scpy or rsync.

I'm a new user of VNC and I didn't realize it can't be used for file transfers. I've
searched the archives of the mailing list but haven't found any detailed solutions.
I'm not very advanced when it comes to networking and such. Can anyone let me know an

The problem described is only an issue if the session being remoted by VNC

(*) Actually, this is an inconsistency in Windows, that the current release
doesn't correctly work-around, but the effect is the same.

Everyone,
For those who want it / need it. I have a .zip file that I worked on that
will allow you to set a password, and create a self installing executable
that will fit on a floppy for deploying VNC server 4.0 to all versions of
WIndows clients. Just burn to a cd after setting it up and you're
I've been looking for something similar myself. I took a look at your
suggestion Mike and it seems like the OS that the client is running is
rather limited. It only works on Win2K and XP Pro (basically NT-based OS's)
so that leaves out XP Home, Win98, 98se and ME...

Have you tried Gencontrol from www.gensortium.com? It's a sort of
"instant VNC" based on TightVNC that does a temporary install of VNC on
a target (server).

Hiya,
I wondered if someone ever tried to create a VNC installation that is as
easy as it can be for user support without installing it at every user's
desktop.
My favourite solution would be:
1. the user downloads an .exe from a webpage
2. the user starts the server .exe (or step 1+2 in one cli
Maybe anyone knows how to work around this:
