Philip,
The current VNC releases don't interact well with Fast User Switching. You
will find that things work correctly if you disable, or simply don't use,
Fast User Switching. This is an issue we are working on.

Tom,
First things first:
Have you been able to compile the X tree on its own on AIX, without any of
the VNC code patched into it? The #else problems you were seeing suggested
that you would find that you couldn't.

I had or have, altho I think I'm making progress, the same problem. What
seems to be working towards a solution is that I uninstalled the patches
and then uninstalled VNC. Following that, I reinstalled the patches and
then VNC. I was able to get a reply from my desktop last night, altho
Jim,
I don't suppose you happened to have Microsoft's so-called anti-spyware
software installed on the problem machine(s), did you?
Cheers,

It's not an update, it's a piece of software, downloadable from Microsoft.
It would be interesting to know which platforms people have had similar
problems on.

Actually, James, it's included in the auto-updates that Microsoft pushes
out Yes, technically it's not an update however, as I said, it's
pushed out by Microsoft using their automated updates.

John,
In what sense is it mandatory?

In that Microsoft pushes it out in the Microsoft Automatic Updates that
they push out. Yes, it's optional, but it's one of these things that they
push it out as if it were one of the regular Windows updates and I read in
one of the auto-updates that they are going to be pushing out a new version
John,
I think you're thinking of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool
update, rather than Microsoft AntiSpyware (formerly Giant AntiSpyware).
I'd be very surprised if the tool update were removing or in some way
incapacitating legitimate applications, since that could land Microsoft in
Oh, my bad... I didn't realize there was a difference.

I think you're absolutely right. The only updates that are 'mandatory' if
you choose to allow Automatic Updates are the Critical Updates. MS
Antispyware doesn't fall into that category, but the Malicious Software
Removal Tool does. I can't see how that tool would affect anything since

Roger,
There is no such version of the RFB protocol as 3.130, so the server you are
connecting to is not a VNC server, which probably explains why the viewer
appears to hang when you connect to it.
I'd recommend installing the standard VNC server on the problem machine
instead.

Hello, Adrian:
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it out today (commenting out the Load
dri line in XF86Config) and IT WORKS!! I can now access display :0 using
a remote viewer from XP.
FYI, the PC I use has the following:
-Asus K7M motherboard
-ATI Xpert 2000 (rage 128) with 32MB
I'm still getting the same old crapy black screen. This has ***got*** be a
bug let me tell you.
BTW, this is the default xstartup script (which looks nothing like yours)
that I get when starting vncserver when no xstartup file is present in the
/home/user/.vnc folder:
#!/bin/sh
