Not sure why Apple has taken this approach but it is a real pain. They dropped the sound-in port on the G4 last year.. now you need to buy a USB microphone ie. iMic which go for around $90 (Aus) Plus you have to set the sound input to the iMic each time you want to use it (if you have rebooted
