Was the computer plugged into the phone line during any recent
thunderstorms? That could well explain it.
Other than that unplug any external USB devices other than mouse and
keyboard and reboot.

Now under OSX the Print Centre takes over and that helpful Epson dialogue

I found the ink level check to be highly inaccurate, esp. when using
ink refills.
The rest do not need to be used very often so I am content to perform
these tasks under classic on the odd occasion.
As far as I know there is no utility to perform these tasks under X.

of them for scientific/math usages.
