I think it's always been exceptionally cheaper to buy RAM separate from your Apple purchase but that was when you could keep your standard RAM chips and add in extra ones yourself. I think the iMac only has the 2 RAM chips that come preloaded so you'd be replacing 2GB of RAM if you wanted
