I tried "Dates to iCal 2" but had an annoying problem with it. It kept throwing up a window midscreen that gave some message about not being able to edit Birthdays. Problem was the message window could not be closed. Each time it appeared all I could do was re-start my Mac to get rid of it.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. For anyone remotely interested, after taking all the comments on board, I ended up getting it done with Migration Assistant. With limited disk space on my MBP, I deleted my own user account (being the old one), which freed up just enough to get everything

Hi Steven, Two things: First - back-ups: You already have a time machine backup of your old Mac book Pro. You don't say if you also have a back-up of the current Macbook set-up. If not - do that first! That way you have a back-up of everything (old machine & new machine) if anything goes wrong!
