If you can use Target disk mode to another mac use that mac to run a new download of Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.8 Combo update if it allows you to instal to your G5 Otherwise it is probably an archive and instal from Leopard disk followed by a new download of Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.8 Combo update

Hi Severin -- -- I just had a similar boot problem after installing 10.5.8. The installation procedure went fine, giving me the Restart button. When I pressed this, I just got the background picture with no top menu (although the dock showed), no response to clicking anything in the dock.
