Hi Severin --
-- I just had a similar boot problem after installing 10.5.8. The
installation procedure went fine, giving me the Restart button. When I
can boot up if above shows Version 10.5.8
is Build 9L30 , DON'T do the steps below.
1. In Finder - from the GO Menu choose Go To Folder
2. Type: /Library/Updates
3. Click GO. The /Library/Updates folder will open
4. Select all contents of this folder and move them to the Trash

If you can use Target disk mode to another mac
use that mac to run a new download of Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.8 Combo
update
if it allows you to instal to your G5
Otherwise it is probably an archive and instal from Leopard disk
followed by a new download of Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.8 Combo update

Hi Severin --

installation procedure went fine, giving me the Restart button. When I
pressed this, I just got the background picture with no top menu
(although the dock showed), no response to clicking anything in the
dock.
