I closed the computer down yesterday, and just restarted it this afternoon.
Tried TextEdit and checked to see if it would replace all, and it does. So,
mysterious episode is over, and still mysterious.
Thanks for the replies, Ronni and Severin.

select a Word file, instead of going
to the app in OS 9.2.2 , Text Edit opens.
To overcome the problem, I 'drag drop' the file to the MS Word icon
in the Dock. Bit of a nuisance but easily done.
Is it possible to keep TextEdit but disable it so that I decide when
to use it ?
Thank you
that I need at present.

DId anyone else notice this feature? You can now open Word documents in
Textedit(panther version) (for those that don't know, this is the free
text reader that comes with Mac OS X)
Amazing! Though I haven't fully tested it out yet with complex
formatted docs(eg tables) it works for text
I have recently moved from OS9 to OSX.
When I open my old MS 2001 Word files they open as TextEdit files. Even
files I open in word and save still open in TextEdit.
Is there any way I can set preferences for MS Word to automatically open any
text or .doc files?
Thanks
