50 years ago today, on Monday night, 22 March 1965, CBS showed the TAGS
episode Opie's Newspaper.
One of my favorites. In my mind's eye, I can still see that 14 year old boy
sitting on our living room linoleum, surrounded by my family, watching that
episode.
Orville Hendricks - Mount
Reading Angel Lane by Sheila Roberts and one of the three main characters
compares her hometown of Angel Falls, WA to Mayberry. Another compares it to
Bedford Falls without Mr. Potter.
That started me to thinking. Did Mayberry have a Mr Potter? Somebody who truly
didn't care about others? Even
Ben Weaver was a lot like Mr. Potter, BUT old Ben had a soft side we did not
see in Mr. Potter... Ex: Christmas Story, when he let Lester Scobey off the
hook, and when he hired Scobey... He also hired Burt

That started me to thinking. Did Mayberry have a Mr Potter?
Interesting question. I'd have to say no. Mayberry had it's share of bad guys,
but in the end they all saw the error of their ways, and (hopefully) attempted
to be better people after Andy straightened them out.
But Bedford Falls'
In attendance at the Winter Park Playhouse production of A Day in
Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, I began to recognize a distinctive
melody emanating from the piano under the hands of the Chico portrayer.
Lo and behold, it was the haunting strains of Welcome Sweet Springtime
aka good old
Martha and I just returned from a vacation to California. And yes, before
you ask, we took in some of the same sights that the Taylor family took in on
their trip out there. (No one appeared on the game show Win or Lose). We
took one of those sight seeing tours that take you all
