The reason some folks are confused about Barney Fife saying “Why don’t you run
up and alley and holler ‘fish’” is because Luther Heggs also utters the same
line in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. As we all know, Don Knotts was basically
playing Barney Fife in that movie, even though the character
>>>In one episode (don't remember which) Barney says something like, "Why
don't you go up an alley and yell fish!" Is that what he said and what does
it mean?<<<

Thanks, Margaret. There are many sayings that are readily evident in
meaning, but I just didn't get the alley-fish meaning. By the way, we're
only 3 hours from "Nashville." Maybe we'll see you or Floyd one of these

The book “Mayberry 101” gives Greenbaum’s explanation: “‘You just go up an
alley and holler fish’ was one of my mother’s sayings. It meant ‘hush up’ and
came from the vendors who sold food in the alleys of her Philadelphia
childhood.”
Perhaps that means if the fish vendors were

My comment about hearing "Why don't you run up an alley and holler 'fish!'"
required a little research. The line appears in TAGS "Citizen's Arrest," MASH

Gee Don thanks, that sounds pretty good, wouldn't mind that for thanksgiving. I
wonder why Andy. And Barney stuck their noses up and said they weren't hungry?

Hey, Mayberry friends, Another theory about the disappearing fish: Since Andy
was Roger Courtney's host, I think Andy gave all the fish to Roger. Seems to me
that would be what Andy would do, he's that kind a' fella' you know.

Andy later tells Floyd they caught a mess of trout and a couple
catfish - seem kind of peculiar? Where are the fish?!

One possibility is they cooked the fish and ate them right after catching
them. Or maybe they were too little, so they threw them back (sportsmen all

OK, here is a list of the types of fish of fish mentioned in Mayberry so far.
Note that I am not attempting to list every single mention of each type of
fish, just the many different KINDS of fish. For example, trout and tuna are
mentioned many times in several different episodes but I don't

These are the fish in Mayberry that I could come up with from just the top

once and it gave me a headache.

Thought about the stuffed whale exhibit that Andy mentions, but a whale is
technically a mammal.
Banjo is a type of catfish, but the banjo mentioned on TAGS isn't a fish.
Drum is in the Mayberry Band, but it isn't the fish.

Have we done fish yet? No that I remember. We've done the birds and the bugs.
Who can name a type of fish mentioned or seen in or near Mayberry? Go!

It appears Opies trout doesn't have any eyes in it.
Freezed the frame and blown it up on TV and it really looks at least like there

Fish for breakfast isn't so unusual in a deep woods campout, which is probably
where Gomer got the idea. Apparently he thought Andy typically had fish for
breakfast at home as much as he had eggs, toast or those delicious Post cereals.

My first mother-in-law was very much a country gal and looked forward to
having 'salt fish' for breakfast. The fish would come packed in large plastic
tubs and were - yup - packed in salt. She said it was only available in months

same routine for five

Paul, Here's an interesting instance of someone eating fish for breakfast.

While it is not a common breakfast meal here in the U.S., my British son-in-law

course, an ocean fish-and probably would not have been

Don't forget that Gomer once presented Aunt Bee with some freshly-caught trout

In the episode Opie's Rival, Andy and Opie are first seen fishing. Then go

I may have asked this question when the technical problems were going on, so I
never saw any feedback.
I was watching an old M*A*S*H episode and Hawkeye used the expression run up
an alley and holler fish.
I always thought this was a Gomer-exclusive, from Citizen's Arrest.
Anyone know the origin
