The ideal option would be just to circulate a text only version of the
newsletter, but the publications are already established as a Word
documents with formatting, so I have to continue to meet that expectation.

I hadn't realised that the Acrobat reader had swollen to such huge
proportions. Practically 9 meg of download is a bit much to ask people to
swallow. On the download site if you select the option for broadband
download

Bj's suggestion is a good idea. Also, perhaps you use a word format with
a statement that pdf copies of documents are available to be downloaded
at URL, etc. I think I might do this.
