Leo,
Currently we're at 500 APs per WiSM2, I'll probably bump that up some to
maintain full redundancy between the 2 data centers we have the WiSMs at.

I had a conversation with sales at an executive briefing, and they
mentioned that the option of a 10gig addon module (far right hand side of
the front) was being considered.
Granted, this was a sales person, and no NDA was signed, so I'm not sure
how much stock I put in it.

When the 5500 series were under development, 10GB was still very rare. I
remember having a conversation with the project lead, and while I had the same
concern about the lack of 10GB, I came away thinking they had made the right
choice. Now that I've lived with the 5508s, I've yet to see traffic

We upgraded all of our WiSM controllers to WiSM2 last August and have
been quite happy with the results.

We discovered this one after a few days on WISM2's: CSCtx69189 -- WISM2

It will only affect real-time multicast type stuff. So for us it's a 9 second
delay on vocera push-to-talk. It does not happen on WISM1. It might be less

Hello Jeff,
On our central campus, we've installed two WiSM2s several months ago with no
issues or problems. One of the WiSM2s is almost fully loaded with 500 WAPs
while the other in a separate chassis is empty to be used for failover of a
single module.

Hi, Chris.
Just wondering what AP license you are using at WiSM-2, since you used 16

We have been using the WISM2's for just about a year without issue. If you
have any specific questions feel free to send me an email.

The only caveat I ran into when first installing them last summer was the
requirement for 12.2.33-SXJ on the chassis, but the need for an upgraded IOS
image on the switch is understandable as it was a new module at the time.
Since then I've been running three of them across two chassis with my
We too have been running the WiSM2's without any problems. The 1000-AP
support and 10G backplane connections are handy.
The only 'issue' we have faced is large multicast load thanks to
ridiculous amounts of mDNS traffic, but that's not the controller's fault.
