I had a tech support issue and had to verify one of my products compatibility with a specific firewall. Basically, you download an iso image, burn it, and put it in an old pIII box or something. The cd boots and installs a basic install of linux, and turns the box into a firewall appliance.

Webdud, The advantage you have with going with an appliance is that you do not have to become a security expert yourself to set the thing up. Watchguard has some templates you can use to set the box up, and they send out updates when needed. I believe the Firebox comes w/ a year of updates. Ide

I doubt there would be a noticeable difference. In theory, the 2.8 would tend to be a little faster, but the XEON MP would have more upgradeability. HOWEVER, the process is NOT your primary concern on this server (not like say a Witango Server). The first item to max out is your hard drive

We use a watchguard x1000 Its great! We originally had an firebox III x2500 and an firebox x1000 Its easy to configure and works excellent I think the x1000 is only $500 more than the x700 so for the extra $500 we found the x1000 was better. Mike D E
