xastir 1.9.2 is available in the Ubuntu repository for (X|K|U)buntu 8.10
However, an attempt to load online maps(tigermap.geo) in this version
fails with 'libcurl or wget not present', even though they are indeed on
the system.
This has been documented in Launchpad as bug #293873.

Well I have managed to compile 1.9.4 on my Ubuntu 8.10 system.
Nearly fell at the last but remembered from fldigi testing to blow away
the old ./xastir folder. Was geting a map error and launch was stopping.
I am getting warnings like the one below. But it's not crashing the app
