I'm not sure I understand the artifact you are describing
(maybe panel "bloom"?). But it is probably a driver problem
and possibly fixed in a more recent version of XFree86. The
version that came with Red Hat 7.3 is undoubtedly very old.

As you can see in the warning, the default colordepth is set to 16...
wile the colordepth of your host (XP) is set to 24 or 32.
Changing the default colordepth to a higher value (i.e. the same
colordepth as your host) will solve your issue.

I was also having a hard time in starting Xserver but the error message was
different.
This may occur because possibly some XFree86 file may be corrupted. I guess
that there is no
repair to Xserver crashes
But the best and safest solution is to re-install only Xwindow system
from installation

So...how do I configure the X86free files properly so that Linux accepts the generic
