in xfree 4.3.0 you could use xrandr perhaps, although you have to swith the output to the external port. you can also have several XF86Config files and just pass them as to startx when you start your X server. I don't recall the exact server option, but I believe it is something like this.

I had a PCI rage 128 a while back. I used it with redhat 7.0 and it worked fine for 2D. Xv would only work in black and white though. I never tried 3D. The card also refused to work as a seconday card. In order to use it with my old G400, I had to make the rage the primary. It worked for me
