I can't speak to whether it's a good idea or not, but I also wanted to do this
and it was rather difficult. The problem is the opensolaris installer doesn't
let you setup slices on a device to install to.
The two ways I came up with were:

Just a hunch.. but what kind of drives are you using? Many of the raid card
vendors report that consumer class drives are incompatible with their cards
because the drives will spend much longer trying to recover from failure than
