LEAD STORY

MORE LAYOFFS MARK TOUGH STRETCH FOR IBM | InformationWeek

IBM is terminating 600 jobs in a Vermont-based division that designs
and builds microprocessors. This follows 15,000 layoffs announced
earlier this year in its microelectronics and technology-services
businesses. Adding to its financial woes, IBM said last month that it
paid an additional $397 million to PricewaterhouseCoopers -- on top
of an initial $3.5 billion -- due to revaluation of some PwC assets.

IBM GETS SERVER ACT TOGETHER | CNET
IBM's once struggling server line is in the midst of a comeback.
Thought its products suffered for nearly a decade as a result of a
fragmented product line, political infighting and an inability to
adopt technology quickly, today Big Blue has solved those problems,
thanks in large part to Linux.

KAPOR UNCOVERING SEARCH ENGINE MYSTERIES | CNET
Lotus founder Mitch Kapor is involved with a new project aiming to
improve the process of finding useful, noncommercial information on
the Web. Nutch.org is dedicated to developing software for locating
documents online, but promises not to cloak its search query formulas
like popular search engines such as Yahoo, Google and MSN.

MEMBERS OFFER GLIMPSE INSIDE WS-I CONSORTIUM | SearchWebServices.com
In a wide-ranging interview, leaders of the Web Services

THE MISSING LINK: Stones roll into digital download era

It's only rock 'n' roll, and you can download it. The Rolling Stones
have started up a deal with RealNetworks Inc., and now wild horses
couldn't drag Mick and Keith from cyberspace. RealNetworks' Rhapsody
online music service will offer the Stones' post-1970 catalog for
download, including classic albums like "Sticky Fingers," "Exile on
Main Street" and "Some Girls." But don't expect any "Satisfaction."
There are some legal kinks to straighten out with the Stones' earlier
stuff before it's available.
