LEAD STORY

"Shining light on Sun's storage tale"
Sun's passion for storage isn't waning. The company is tooting the
horn of a Sun server and storage pairing that gives customers one
place to shop and "one throat to choke." Sun is trying to take a bite
out of the sultans of storage EMC. Sun is behind EMC in the market
for storage products linked to Solaris, a market Sun should own.

[1.] "Sun admits ASP better than Java for Web"
In a flyer promoting its Cobalt RaQ 4 server appliance, Sun says
Active Server Pages are better than Java when it comes to faster,
simpler Web applications. Could some of the Cobalt engineers be
getting a call from Palo Alto soon?

[2.] "B2B sites lagging in customer service"
Sun's deal with i2 Technologies to create a software bundle aimed at
helping companies improve customer service could be the TLC B2B
needs. New research shows nearly 30% of surveyed business-to-business
companies did not respond to basic customer service inquiries and
that only 2% of companies have private marketplaces with
user-friendly search functions for customer self-service.

[3.] "Take that! Linux beats MS in benchmark test"
The penguin is beaming. The Transaction Processing Performance
Council released new data this week showing that IBM's upcoming DB2
7.2 release running on Linux 2.4.3 outperforms SQL Server 2000
running on Windows 2000 in the 100GB category. IBM is proud;
Microsoft says keep in mind this was a database test and not an
operating system evaluation.

[4.] "Open source group slams Microsoft"
Boys, boys, boys!!! The open source community and Microsoft are at it
again in a battle that seems to pit science versus capitalism. This
latest round comes from Mister Linux Linus Torvalds and nine of his
comrades, who called Microsoft the "practitioner of the deliberately
incompatible." Earlier this month, a MS official dissed free software
licensing, calling it a threat to intellectual property rights,
security, and the software business.

[5.] "Bush administration rewriting national IT protection plan"
Uncle Sam wants you - for your input. The Bush administration has
started rewriting the federal government's plan for protecting
critical technology infrastructures in the United States. They say
the current plan won't cut it because it has too many flaws and
doesn't do enough to help companies strengthen their IT security
defenses. Input from the private sector is welcome.

THE MISSING LINK

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Web surfers hunt like animals, researchers find"
Computer scientists are getting primal when it comes to simplifying
the search for material on the Internet. A scientist named Ed Chi at
Xerox's research center is working on a program that determines a Web
site's usability. Chi is applying foraging theories developed by
ecologists decades ago to his program because he believes people surf
the Web much the same way animals prowl for prey. He wants to make
surfing an intuitive exercise rather than one where users feel like
stranded tourists in a foreign country.
