What does it say under the mouse (by the ball)? Check the end of the cable,
where it plugs into the computer. If the plug is small and round (like the
keyboard), then it is ps/2. If it is trapezoidal shaped (like the monitor
plug), then it is serial.
Does
cat /proc/misc
show psaux (this is a ps/2 connector)?
