Agree... but I ever choose THE SAME set of options on my kernels, so it's a
mistery for me why the machine experiences the slowdown on 2.4.7 and works
flawlessly on 2.4.6.

I run all stable kernel releases.  I have not experienced any problems
with 2.4.7, or any other kernel since 2.3.99.  None.  Trick is to find the
config options that work for you and that you need, and save that .config
file safely.
