Another approach to configuring Samba (among other services) is using
Webmin http://www.webmin.com/ which provides you with a browser-based
GUI Linux administration tool. First go to Servers -> Samba and tell it
to use encrypted passwords and to add any new Linux user account also to
Samba. Then add the users who need access to your Linux drives. Then set
up Samba shares for those parts of your Linux filesystem you want to
grant access to. There you can add the users who will have access (or
use a special group for these users and grant access to the group).
IIRC it is also possible to sync Windows and Samba passwords, but I
never dug that deep into Samba. Maybe someone else can help.
