Like what files? Sounds like useful information. I would only try this
against raw source too. Not Redhat supplied stuff, which is probably
heavily patched already, and may conflict.

Exactly! The only requirement is a supported/working ethernet NIC.
Most are supported, but there is always a chance you might have to
play with this.
Bellsouth sells that modem for $125 IIRC, if you don't want to go the
ebay route, and want to make sure it is pre-configured. You'll need
rp-pppoe or some PPPoE client too. Pretty easy to set up though. No
patching! Bundled with Redhat, or http://roaringpenguin.com.
