An ethernet based ADSL modem is about 100$ more expensive than a
SppedTouch here in France. Add the minimal (but not null) cost
of an ethernet. In UK not only you pay more for
an ethernet modem but the ISP monthly fee is also higher.
You see there are people who pay equipment and from
their own pocket a thing the Unix aristocracy seems to ignore.
There also people who come from the Windows world and the first
thing they see is Linux not allowing them to use their ADSL
modem.
That is why I have built a Redhat-based kit with all the elements
needed for USB SpeedTouch (a patched 2.4.5 kernel, a ppp supporting
pppotam, bridge-utils, a modified HOWTO). The only thing
I don't include is speedmgmt (the firmware loader) because it is
not redistributable)
