Hmm...perhaps this is a better question:

Where do you think it would be better to ask this question?
A particular mailing list, or newsgroup?
It seems that this is not as easy a problem as I first 
thought! :-)
My setup is the default setup when first installing RH7.1, 
so so if there were a problem using USB with the default 
kernel or something, then I had hoped that the Seawolf list 
members might know of it.

Printconf-gui seems to be all set up properly; yet nothing 
prints--when I send a test page from printconf-gui to the 
printer, nothing happens.  Just a confirmation "OK" button 
stating that the page was sent.  No action at all from the 
printer...
