Ah, however--this I did...(type in /dev/usb/lp0 in
printconf.gui).
Also, I have recompiled the kernel with USB, (and ZIP
drive), and everything went fine...
But I still cannot print--I tried typing "modprobe
printer",but the response it that it cannot find the
printer module...
Sending a test page to the printer makes no error, and no
response from the printer; when I reboot, I see messages
scrolling past, saying something like USB: No Such Device.
Also, a strange thing: in /var/log/dmesg, (and when I am
booting I see something about this), I get these two lines:
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
lp0: console ready
I DON'T WANT TO USE THE PARALLEL PORT FOR THE PRINTER! How
do I tell the computer to stop this? I have checked
everything I can, in terms of printconf, and the printcap
file, etc. etc.
If I type:
# cat /etc/fstab > /dev/usb/lp0
--nothing happens (this is done from root).
If I try /dev/usb/lp1 instead, I get an error "No Such
Device". If I try cat /etc/fstab > /dev/lp0, the shell
hangs, and I have to type a control-C to get a prompt back.
Strange...
I enabled the ZIP drive (parallel port), and now a ZIP
Drive ICON appears on the desktop in KDE; but when I try to
use it, it won't mount: it tells me that I need to specify
a filesystem.
A line was appended automatically in /etc/fstab:
/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip100.0 auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
This looks OK; but I still cannot get into a ZIP disk,
neither a used one (with Windows vfat stuff on it), or a
blank one.
I tried changing "auto" in fstab to vfat, and then to
msdos, but both reported that the kernel didn't have
support for them. I put it back to "auto", but I don't
know where to go from here...
ANYWAY...here's the main part of the /etc/printcap file; it
appears to be OK:
USBEPSON777:\
:sh:\
:ml=0:\
:mx=0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/USBEPSON777:\
:lp=/dev/usb/lp0:\
:lpd_bounce=true:\
:if=/usr/share/printconf/mf_wrapper:
I have really no idea what all of this means; but it seems
right (and at least I know I am using the right device!
Unless this stanza in printcap is created from
printconf-gui, then it is only what I typed in, eh? ;-)
But I really, really want my PRINTER to work!!! Dang!
What am I missing here?
Thanks in advance.............
