well ... as to "where" your current installation is, that depends on whether it was installed using rpm or if it was manually installed from tar file. If rpm, then just do "rpm -qa | grep apache". this will tell you whether there's an rpm install, then you can use different rpm commands to get the details.
If it was a manual install, it probably gets in /usr/local/apache; but you can type "locate apache" or "locate httpd.conf" and peruse through the output for the details. Now ... as far as "installing over" the current installation, well, here again you've got two choices. You can do an "rpm upgrade" or a manual upgrade. It'll overwrite your current installation with the exception of your current configuration files, which it will keep or save backups of. So you don't have to worry about accidentally erasing anything.
