Sorry this response is a bit lagged.

Is it wise to put a VPN in the DMZ?  Most definitely,  placing the VPN
device in the DMZ gives  a more "insulated" layer of protection to your
internal network, giving your firewall the ability to handle incoming
traffic rules.

If I might suggest a product that is low-cost and robust for VPN's, try
looking at Netscreen.  I have developed a solution for a client that could
utilize NetScreen 5 to 3000 clients.  I find the abilities of the OS on the
box to be advanced and more than adequate for deployment.  In addition to
creating the VPN, assess user acess -  are yours going to access from
dial-up or from a remote office? ..  there are a few solutions you can apply
in either case.
