SSL is your best friend.  Find some POP3 server that accepts SSL
connections.  Outlook already has SSL support built in.  For HTTP,
there's HTTP over SSL, and servers like Apache with the mod_ssl module
will provide this.  For FTP...that's a big problem.  There are very few
freely-available Windows client programs that understand FTP over SSL or
SSH/SCP/SFTP.  They exist, but unfortunately, a lot of them are unusable
for the average "dummy" non-specialist who's never seen or heard of a
command line.x
