Hi We have Cox Cable at our home, a good modem I would highly reccommend is the Toshiba surfboard. And as for a shitty box for the firewall, YES. Do it. It is simple, and is a much more secure solution than a program like zone alarm, (which I used before I set up the firewall box). We use Smoothwall, available at www.smoothwall.org . It has lots of features, is easy to set up and install, and lets you set up your remote access without too much trouble or worry. It acts as a dhcp server, cacheing name server, does NAT, you can add a third nic and configure it for a DMZ, has a very nice browser gui for administration and monitoring (it includes snort). Has built in modules for folks who play quake and diablo and a host of other games online ( no need to set up port forwarding manually). And the best part is, it is free, ( hardened linux 2.4.x kernek). We have a network of 6 computers running behind it, and all share out the cable connection. It is very nice :) As for the topology, I have the modem of course runing into the firewall box (which has been up and running for solid 3 months now), from there I have a 5 port linksys switch which goes to the three computers in the front of the house, and to a 5 port unmanaged hub, the other three computers are running from the hub. All this is strung together with about 250 - 300 ft. of cat5.. Good luck, Lahoma Lemanski ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2002 10:39 PM Subject: Home Networking
